Current Water Conditions

The Truckee River had a bump in flows due to water being released from the lakes. Flows are measuring around 76 CFS out of Tahoe City, 75 CFS through the town of Truckee, 168 CFS near Martis Creek, and 401 CFS at Farad. The flows are good for this time of year and the water clarity can vary in sections with the recent rain we have had. Glenshire to the stateline is the best section to fish with the flows higher in that area. Mornings and evenings are the best times to fish with the fish biting more then, but anglers can get bites all day with the current water temperatures. No need to rush out in the early morning hours to get bites.

Water Temperatures

Water temperatures are ideal. Expect water temps to be in the low to mid 50s°F throughout the day. Most of the colder water is below Boca to Farad. These water temperatures are prime feeding temperatures for the trout.

Hatches

Blue winged olives and midges are the primary hatches in the morning. October Caddis are still out there. Most October Caddis are hatching towards the last hour of the day. Crawdads are still out there as well. If it is a cloudy or stormy day, expect the Blue Winged Olive hatch to be more prominent.

Effective Tactics

Depending on where anglers are fishing, multiple tactics can provide some bites right now. With the water a bit lower and muddier in the Glenshire area, worms and eggs can work for anglers paired with something like a pat’s rubber legs. Indicator nymphing throughout the day continues to be the most productive tactic this time of year. Fish are staging themselves in the slower, deeper runs and pools. Nymphing with stoneflies and using blue winged olives or midges as a dropper is providing good results right now. Using enough weight to get your flies down into the deeper parts of these runs will be key to finding fish. In the last hour of the day, fishing with a large October Caddis dry size 6 through 8 in areas with higher flows can produce some bites. With the rain the area has received recently and changing weather patterns, there may be some opportunities to chase bigger fish using streamers too.

Catch Report

The bite is best below the outflow of the Little Truckee River from Floriston to the stateline. As fishing conditions continue to cool, the bigger fish should start to actively feed more during the transition from fall to winter.
