The week started out slow but changed when DFG arrived and things heated up to a frenzy. Fishing got hot and catching sizzled and a few larger fish started to hit my board. Daryl Simons of Mission Viejo caught a 5lb 8oz. on power bait out of Big Virginia with Mateo Venegas age 3 caught a 4lb 2oz with his Dad's help, and Todd Roberts Jr. (age 11) of Ramona caught a nice 3lb 2oz Alpers on a crawler.

Weather stayed very warm most of the week until Friday when the clouds arrived around 5pm and a few sprinkles hit the lake late while I was fishing Little Virginia, and it created confusion as to what was happening on the surface, being the dry fly addict that I am.

Bait for the week was mainly crawlers, with salmon eggs and marshmallows and crickets when you can catch them.

Lures hitting the charts were gold Tasmanian Devils, Thomas Buoyant, silver Kastmaster prism, and gold/red Hot Shots.

Flies for tube tuggers were small midges about 4 to 6 feet off the bottom with an intermediate line, sow-bugs, or the stand-by of woolly buggers on a full sink, either black/olive or orange no bead as reported by the Balzano brothers from Whittier. Dries for the week were grey hackle yellow, hard body ants, cinnamon ants, small hoppers near the bloom, and yellow sallies.

Clouds rolled in today and it looks like we are in for a short weather change for the next 3 days.

The weather has been cooperating with the exception for one day, and fishing slowed up a bit until the DFG truck arrived, as always. We are still getting 350 pounds of trout every week and have not been missed all summer. DFG is formulating their air-stocking into the back country and that obviously will be on my priority list for future fish trips. DFG put in some nice fatties a pound and better. I fished Little Virginia a couple times this past week and did great,...... Read More

Snow, can you believe it, the 6th of August marks the 3rd time I've seen snow in August in my 34 years. But after 4 days of wind it was the staccato for the week. Fishing was good, but like I always say, catching is more important and it had slowed to a crawl during the high winds. It turned around when DFG and Alpers stocked the same week, and everyone has been catching a lot of fish. Brent Brown of Hemet took a 2lb...... Read More
