Snow, can you believe it, the 6th of August marks the 3rd time I've seen snow in August in my 34 years. But after 4 days of wind it was the staccato for the week. Fishing was good, but like I always say, catching is more important and it had slowed to a crawl during the high winds. It turned around when DFG and Alpers stocked the same week, and everyone has been catching a lot of fish.

Brent Brown of Hemet took a 2lb 6 oz out on a power worm, Ryan Locks of Upland took a nice 2lb 7oz Alpers on a lure, Ryan Durfee, age 6 of Monrovia caught a 4lb 1oz Alpers on Power Bait out of Big Virginia, Taylor Glawacki of Granite Bay caught a nice 2lb 7oz on worms, and Ashley Amundson of Napa caught a really nice 2lb 15oz on power bait, Debbie Tunila of Lake Forest caught a nice 2lb 6oz Alpers on Orange Power Bait, Brent Brown of Hemet caught a 2lb 6oz on a power worm, and the biggie of the week goes to Steve Johnson of Visalia with a 5lb 8oz Alpers on a fly.

When the week finished the weather cleared and it looks good for the next 5 days according to the Weather "Drama" Channel.

Lures: Thomas Buoyant red/gold, cripple lures, trout teasers and small rooster tails. Bait: Worms, salmon eggs, power eggs and power bait (sage colored garlic) and crickets. Flies: Emergers in light tan, Stillwater nymphs, black woolies, olive woollies, red throated Matukas. Dries used were parachute Adams, Griffiths Gnats, Professors (large), and small mosquitoes (red or black tail).

Backcountry fishing was mainly black gnats/red tail (brookies); woolies full sink for some great action in Blue Lake, and black ants in most of the lakes. Terrestrials are coming out of hiding since the wind died and will start to show up on the water shortly. I'm finding yellow/black bumble bees everywhere, ladybugs, and even a couple wooly worms (yellow/black). It's kind of early for the worms, and the Belding ground squirrels are staying really close to their holes, hmmmm! See you on the water.....carolyn

Another great week of breezy days, one day of wind, a full moon, and loads of bugs blowing into the water making it a virtual buffet for trout. Some high clouds moved through today and fishing was terrific, but catching slowed to a crawl unless you used your best method for inflated crawlers or pink power worms with a pinch of power bait on the eye of the hook. The Hong group did well from a boat this afternoon and even caught a couple of the elusive browns that...... Read More

Fishing arrived as did the normal summer weather we have expected in the Eastern Sierra with a huge explosion on the 4th. The fireworks were better than 2008, which was hard to believe, but I saw every 348 explosions plus the grand finale to beat all finales. The wind picked up over night dropping the temp, but it calmed down during the daylight and stayed breezy on and off. There is a fire in Yosemite putting a brown haze on the mountains and the air smells of heavy smoke....... Read More
