Wow! What an incredible fishing opener we had this weekend. ?ĮWith the lake receiving over 10,000 guests on the water and over ?Į5,000 boats on the lake it was one of the busiest openers we have ?Įhad here at the lake in 10 years. The surface temperature for ?Įthe lake was around 56 degrees which in turn made for some great ?Įcatches over the weekend. We had some nice fish come to the scales ?Įon opening weekend for the opening day Fred J. Hall tournament. ?ĮThe winner for big fish honors scored a 4 pound 15 ounce rainbow ?Įthat took the tournament. There were also some very nice cutthroats ?Įcoming to the scales and also some very good looking browns. All ?Įin all everyone that I talked to here in the tackle shop had filled ?Įtheir limits of trout and were very happy at the success rate ?Įthat they had on the lake. As far as the hot tactics here on ?Įthe lake they are as follows. For conventional anglers I would ?Įsuggest fishing the areas of Alligator point, Mcgee Bay, and ?Įalso Green Banks. The fish are concentrated in 12-20 feet of ?Įwater and are looking for the dreaded threaded inflated night ?Įcrawler, as well as a couple of different types of power bait. ?ĮThe hot power bait is going to half to be the new Gulp Eggs ?Įfrom Berkley in the colors of yellow and Fluorescent Orange. ?ĮAlso the new Rainbow gulp dough, lemon twist and lime twist ?Įpower bait dipped in Berkley Garlic Dip or Nitro Griese has ?Įbeen the hot ticket for still fishing. As far as the trolling ?Įis concerned I would suggest using lead core line and trolling ?Įyour lures at 2 to 3 ?? colors. The hot lures around the lake ?Įright now are the Owner Mira Shad in flame and also pink passion. ?ĮAlso the Rapala brown trout cd-3 has also been producing some ?Įnice fish. Also size #2 needlefish in the colors of black bikini, ?Įfire tiger, red dot frog, and bubblegum have been bringing in ?Įsome nice catches. The areas that I would concentrate on would ?Įbe the chalk cliffs as well as the run from mcgee bay to sandy ?Įpoint. These areas have given up some nice fish lately so be ?Įprepared for that lunker! For all of you fly guys out there ?Įhere's the scoop! The fly fishing for the opener of 2007 has ?Įbeen nothing short of spectacular! Though the lake has received ?Įa lot of pressure in the past few days the fishing has not been ?Įaffected at all for all you still water nymphers out there! ?ĮThe rods have been consistently bent at a few locations ?Įthroughout the lake. Some of the hot spots on the lake are ?Įgoing to be Big Hilton, Mcgee Bay, and Sandy Point. The fish ?Įhave been concentrated in 8 to 14 feet of water. The fish ?Įhave been concentrating on midge larva in the mornings and ?Įthen switching over to the pupa in the afternoons. The ?Įflies that I would suggest throwing are midge patterns in ?Įthe sizes of #16-18. Zebra midges, Tiger Midges, Stevie's ?ĮWonder's Gray/Black, and also I would suggest using a crystal ?Įleech or perch fry pattern as your point fly as some of the ?Įlarger fish in the lake are foraging on this delicate morsel. ?ĮAlso you can throw copper crystal emergers and gillies in ?Įthe afternoons as some of the pods of fish are moving up in ?Įthe water column to feed on the emerging midge pupa. For ?Įthe guys that are stripping out there I would suggest a ?ĮType 3-4 full sinking line to get down to the fish at this ?Įtime of the year. I would suggest stripping our crystal ?Įleeches, loebergs, hornbergs, hale bop leaches as well ?Įas crystal buggers in black, brown, purple, and cinnamon. ?Į3x tippet to your point fly or you will get broken off!!!! ?ĮHang, On and Good Luck!
