The sunny weather sure hasn't helped the fishing at Pyramid Lake lately. Forecasts are calling for a light storm system late into the weekend that should kick things into gear. Clouds can also help greatly this time of the year so we’ll see how weather plays out. Even on the sunny days fish are being caught in the low light periods.
The Holo Midge bite is in full swing at this point and should continue for the next few months. Holographic Midges and Micro Holographic Midges are the ticket right now in a variety of colors. Albino Wino tends to do well on cloudy days whereas the Brown/Red variation and the 49er are good on sunny days. Fly depth is crucial to success so you’ll want to have your flies within 6” to 1’ off the bottom.
In the early and late times of the day, you’ll often see fish porpoise on the surface when the lake is calm. This is a great opportunity to adjust your indicator and bring your flies up near the surface. If you're seeing a lot of surface activity, try hanging your top midge within 2-3’ from the surface. This is one of the only times you won't want your flies on the bottom. Go where the fish are!
