South Lake Report

The South Lake staffers managed to get 8 boats in the water for the holiday weekend and the boat landing opened on Friday morning. Despite the snow, several anglers braved the weather to find a strong bite on rainbows, brookies and browns. Trolling olive wooly buggers on the surface by the rock slide was by far the best tactic and produced a lot of fish. John Batzloff of Solana Beach, CA caught nearly 20 fish in just a few hour using the wooly buggers and Rapalas trolled on top. Orange or Green Berkley Powerworms with a Gulp Egg was another dynamite combo for those who prefer plastics. Anglers from shore found a good bite on nightcrawlers and salmon eggs. Top fish of the weekend was caught by Jim Green of Laguna Niguel, CA and weighed in at 4lbs 11oz. Jim is not your typical fair weather fisherman. He hiked, in dumping snow, all the way to the rock slide. I've never even heard of anyone hiking there in good weather let alone in cold and snow. Jim caught and released a bunch of pan sized rainbows before hooking his trophy using his fly rod and an olive wooly bugger.
