Bridgeport Reservoir - Bridgeport, CA
Spot Information
| Fish Species: | Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Brook Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Sacramento Perch |
Bridgeport Reservoir is a premier stillwater fly fishing destination in the Eastern Sierra, offering anglers access to large rainbow and brown trout in a high desert valley framed by dramatic mountain scenery. Fed by the East Walker River, this fertile reservoir supports fast-growing trout populations that routinely exceed 20 inches.
Spring and fall are peak seasons, with trout feeding aggressively in shallow water on midges, leeches, and damselfly nymphs. Indicator rigs with chironomids or balanced leeches produce consistent results, especially during spring hatches. In warmer months, fish transition to deeper water, and float tubes or small boats become essential to reach productive zones. Damsel and callibaetis hatches offer solid dry fly opportunities, particularly on calm mornings.
The East Walker inlet and southern shallows are prime areas for fly anglers due to inflowing nutrients and spawning trout movement. Streamer fishing can be excellent, especially when targeting larger browns along weed lines or drop-offs.
Bridgeport’s combination of easy access, trophy potential, and consistent insect activity makes it a top-tier destination for fly fishers. It remains one of the few lakes in the region where anglers can target trout in both shallow and deep water using a variety of techniques throughout the season.
