Blue Lake Lower - Hope Valley, CA

Lake Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
Lower Blue Lake, located in Alpine County near Hope Valley, is a peaceful high-elevation fishing destination in the Sierra Nevada. About 12 miles south of Highway 88, the lake is accessed via a seasonal road that typically opens in early summer, depending on snow conditions. Sitting at an elevation of around 8,200 feet, Lower Blue Lake is the smaller of the two Blue Lakes, known for its crystal-clear waters, dramatic alpine backdrop, and quiet atmosphere.

Stocked regularly with rainbow trout by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the lake is a favorite among both beginner and experienced anglers. Trout fishing is best with bait such as salmon eggs or PowerBait, and success rates are generally good during the warmer months. The calm waters and abundance of fish make it an inviting spot for relaxed, shoreline fishing or casting from a small boat.

In addition to fishing, Lower Blue Lake offers a range of outdoor activities including camping, boating, hiking, and swimming. Its remote setting and natural beauty make it an ideal retreat for those looking to unplug and enjoy the Sierra wilderness. Whether fishing or simply soaking in the view, Lower Blue Lake remains one of California’s hidden alpine treasures.
