The Truckee saw a drop in flows out of Lake Tahoe this week, going from 300 CFS down to 100. They have offset this with increased flows out of Boca, and the Farad gauge is still holding right at 500 CFS. This is typical flow regime for this time of year as the rafting along Highway 89 winds to a close. Because of this, the section along highway 89 will become increasingly difficult to fish and we would recommend focusing on the canyon area for the best fishing conditions. Glenshire is flowing at 185 CFS and will be a good option for those looking for an area with easy access and wading. We also saw some good hatches of Midges and Baetis along this stretch of river, mostly towards the evening. I’d also expect to see some October Caddis start to show up in a matter of a week or two, so have those orange stimulators ready! With the colder mornings and shorter days, the fishing is good all day right now, so don’t worry about those early morning starts, take your time to get out. The nymphs this week have been baetis, midges, caddis and stoneflies. Streamer fishing in the canyon and through Reno has started up as the temps drop and the browns start their prespawn behavior. You can go big or small, light or dark on this river, they will take most options, so long as they’re presented well. The most important factor would be using a good amount of weight in the fly and a sinking tip line, get it down there!. And don’t forget to cover water, streamer fishing is a game of putting your flies in front of as many fish as possible. Have you had a chance to shop our streamer selection this summer? We’ve really upped our game this year and we’re sitting fat with what we think is the best streamer selection in the region! Not in Truckee? No worries, check out our online store, where we have every fly sold in the shop just a click of a button away.
