Hello fellow anglers.
Before we get into your local fishing report, I want to remind all anglers both young and the young at heart of a 33rd Annual Event here locally. Since 1989* a Volunteer Run Event, a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit FREE Kids Fishing Derby at Lampe Park in Gardnerville NV.
The goal of the KFD is to get kids hooked on fishing, and spending time outdoors with their families. 1200 child anglers between 3–12 years old are expected to fish the Derby FREE, but MUST pre-register in order to receive their Session Entry Ticket. Right now the second session on Saturday for preschoolers is full, and the other spots are filling up fast. Registration closes on Friday June 5th at 4pm.
You can email Tiffany Ellis at KFDMEDIATEAM@gmail.com for all the information.

Raley's Store #109 – Douglas County Parks & Rec, Mason Valley Fish Hatchery, Nevada Department of Wildlife.
I am asking all of my fellow anglers to put down the rod for one or two days and become a volunteer at this event. Come join us and make a great memory in a kid’s life. Just remember when we all started fishing.
I also know that some companies in our area have something called giveback time. This is where you can take the day off and get paid for volunteering at a local event.
Now I keep saying Kids Fishing Derby, which it is. But this is also a great family event.
I hope to see you all out there on 6th and 7th of June.
LAKE TAHOE
Anglers have been fishing shallow in the early morning in about 30 ft of water on the west shore. They have been trolling fast with big Rapalas and picking up a few small mackinaws.
As the sun gets a little higher, and after soaking the minnow trap, fish a little deeper in 150 to 175 ft of water with a jig and a live minnow.
Talking with my friend Jason, he said he and his friend caught 10 nice macs that one morning.
For more information go to rubyjeancharters.com or call 775-233-5055.
CAPLES LAKE
As of this weekend, the Caples Lake Resort will have all their rental boats in the water and the boat ramp will be open. The EID public launch ramp is scheduled to be open as well.
I personally like to troll deep with Rapalas for the bigger mackinaws and rainbows. Flashers and a threaded nightcrawler has always been productive.
Shore anglers, best areas have been by the spillway or by Woods Creek using spinners, inflated night crawlers or salmon eggs on the bottom.
For more information call the Caples Lake Resort at 209-258-8888.
WOODS LAKE
As of last weekend, the road was still closed. They are trying to get it open for this weekend, but still questionable.
BLUE LAKES
The road is open to the fourth gate as of mid this week. There is still some snow and a lot of mud up past the gate. No need for anyone to ruin their Memorial weekend with a tow truck.
HIGHLAND LAKES, BURNSIDE LAKE, TAMARACK LAKE, SUNSET LAKE ROADS
Closed as of mid this week.
RED LAKE
I have not fished the lake for a while, nor have I received any reports. The lake has rainbow and brook trout in it.
Best area to fish is right by or on the dam with spinners, gold Kastmasters, salmon eggs or inflated night crawlers.
INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR
The campground is still closed due to the wildfire.
Fishing has been slow from the shore. Anglers using a small boat or float tube have been doing fair on the side over by the campground area.
WEST FORK CARSON RIVER – ALPINE COUNTY
The waters are running good in the Hope Valley area. I would start up off of Blue Lakes Rd and work your way towards the meadow where 88 and 89 come together.
I spoke with CDG and they have no scheduled plants for this week.
Panther Martin spinners in a blk with red dots silver blade, or a yellow with red dots and a silver blade has always been my kryptonite.
Be careful still down in the Woodfords Canyon area. The waters are still moving pretty fast.
For more information call Todd at the Creekside Lodge at 530-212-8040.
EAST FORK CARSON RIVER – ALPINE COUNTY
The water is still running high, but very fishable.
Check out the deep pools and flat slack waters with a Panther Martin spinner. Deeper holes use a salmon egg or a half a nightcrawler.
The river is full of fish from Alpine County, and the bite is on.
I talked with a few anglers that caught 2 or 3 and another caught 7 and released all but a couple for dinner. Most have been in the 2 to 3 lb range.
I spoke to the resort this week and they only had a couple RV spots and a couple camp spots left open. If you plan to get up there, I would call the Carson River Resort at 530-694-2229.
Don't be surprised if they have a big BBQ cooking on Saturday night. Phill the owner loves to smoke some good meats.
TOPAZ LAKE
The lake is full and the fishing has been good to fair for small rainbows.
Trollers have done well with Rapalas on the road side and the south end. But don't go too far south or you will find the willow forest that's under the water, "Snag City".
Shore anglers have done fair with Powerbait or inflated nightcrawlers.
BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR
I fished last weekend and caught a few nice fish. I did hook into one fish that I swear almost broke my Ugly Stik. There are some hogs in that lake.
Best areas have been off of Rainbow Point or on the south end. I caught all of my fish on a J5 perch Rapala. I also lost a lot of fish on that lure.
The Bridgeport Marina is open for launching and boat mooring. They offer RV and tent camping.
Now my favorite is the tent cabins they offer. They have a small general store and a fish cleaning station.
For more information call 760-932-7001.
Note to all boaters: You must have your boat or any floating vessel inspected before getting on the water. It is a quick and easy process and is located at the ball field in Bridgeport.
Don't get caught without your sticker, or it might cost you a heavy $$.
UPPER OWENS RIVER ABOVE BENTONS CROSSING
We last fished the Cutthroat Run here a few times a week to 10 days ago and while it really wasn’t in full swing and numbers appeared to be lower than the last two years we mostly got “Juniors” 12” to 14” and a few 20” to 22”.
Yellow Spot Nymphs, Egg Patterns, San Juan Worms, and Wooly Buggers were all working those days we were out there.
The flow in the river changes depending on how much water LADWP is sending from Grant Lake through a tunnel to East Portal.
While we were there it was up to 147 cfs versus what I would call normal for May at 70 to 90 cfs. This may or may not make a difference in the amount of Cutts making their way upstream from Lake Crowley.
Today the flow is down a bit to 130 cfs and keeping in mind that in past years there have been secondary runs that come up a week or two after what appears to be the main run.
I’ve heard there’s a lot of fishing pressure on those Cutts the past week so maybe we’ll miss that and see some fresh fish when we get back at it starting on Thursday.
GULL AND JUNE LAKES
My good friend Al and I fished Gull on the 7th and unexpectedly caught only three Rainbows. In recent years May fishing here has been excellent so that was a bit of a surprise.
The next day, we didn’t know what to expect on June and again, to our surprise, got 25, keeping 9. Much better day of fishing I’d say.
All 25 were grabbing Garlic Pinch Crawlers or Pink and White Mice Tails.
Upon checking the CDFW Trout Planting Schedule online after Opener, Gull was stocked last week, June not since the week before Opener.
Hopefully, this week prior to Memorial Day Weekend the state will hit June again to go along with bigger Rainbows from Oregon being put in by entities other than the state.
I hope you all have a wonderful and safe Memorial weekend. And remember when you meet a vet, shake their hand and say thank you.
I hope to see you on the waters this weekend. If you get a photo of your catch, send it to editor@recordcourier.com.
One last note. I will be fishing in our area this weekend and then I am headed to Oregon for a while. Hopefully to show you a 25lb salmon or lingcod if I am that lucky.
So the next report will not be until the middle of June.
Good fishin’ and tight lines.
Good luck on your next fishing adventure. If you have a question. a report in our local fishing area or have a photo of your catch, send it to nevada@fishreports.com. Hope to see you on the waters. Good fishin' and tight lines.
