Water Conditions
Anglers fishing on the Truckee River this week can expect similar flows and conditions as last week. Water temperatures have cooled down to around 58 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, creating comfortable conditions for the fish to actively feed and fatten up before winter. With winter on its way soon, some of the brown trout are currently showing pre-spawn aggression in the Truckee River. Cooler weather is forecasted for next week, so peak fall fishing conditions should continue. The current flows on the Truckee River are 76 CFS near Tahoe City, 380 CFS near the Boca Confluence, and 400 CFS near Farad.
Tips for the Week
With conditions as good as they are on the Truckee River, anglers can try a few tactics depending on the time they’re fishing. In the evening, anglers will find good dry fly fishing opportunities using october caddis, pale morning dunns, or small grey caddis. Most of the hatches right now are occurring in the evening, but you might see some afternoon hatches. In the morning, nymphing, either under an indicator or tight line, is working well. Using streamers in the morning can also produce some bites. The streamer bite usually lasts until about 10 am. The fish are located all over the runs and holding shallow in the fast water. Fish can also be found in the pools, so don't wade too far out.
Suggested Flies or Lures
Some fly favorites to try on the Truckee River this week are Pats Rubber Legs, Pheasant Tail Nymph size 16, Elk Hair Caddis, E/C Caddis, or Sculpins.
