If You’re Waiting, You’re Flailing
The conditions have been about as good as they’ve been all summer, in fact maybe better than they’ve been all summer because our obnoxious little vampiric friends, the mosquitoes and biting flies, are finally disappearing. The weather has been mostly spectacular, warm days with a light cool breeze in the afternoons, the occasional bit of high country rain, and evenings that are cool not cold perfect for making s’mores (in developed campsites only people!).
Hikers are still out in numbers but it’s pretty clear that a lot of the hikers are educators or in school because things got super quiet during the week as soon as most of the schools started a few weeks ago. We’re still seeing lots of hikers on weekends, and I’m sure it’s going to be super duper busy over the holiday weekend, but after that it should be some of THE BEST HIKING OF THE YEAR. I know it’s my favorite time of the year to hit the trail…I can sleep in, hit the trail at 10am and not only do I see nary another soul on the trail but the temps in mid September rarely break 70 at 10k feet so I don’t fear overheating and turning into a giant baked potato in overpriced hiking boots. The point is – it’s been amazing hiking, and it’s going to get better.
Anglers at Lake Sabrina are still catching good numbers of Rainbows from ¾ to 2lbs, especially after another dose of Idaho Rainbows found their wait to the Bishop Creek Canyon last week. Along with those 7 DFW trucks full of fish a few weeks back, things just keep on rolling. The good news is we still have MORE fish coming too….we’re going to keep dumping fish through September.
The water level at Sabrina started to creep down a little but thanks to a variance from LA DWP, Edison was able to store some water at South Lake so they have now started pulling water from the South Fork. This along with a bit of rain a few weeks back has brought Lake Sabrina back up a few inches so we’re holding steady at a VERY nice level – right near the highest of the season. Word we have from SCE is that we will be creeping down through the fall but with the water we’ll have, we plan to operate through the 3rd week in October at least (weather permitting). YAY!!!
Fishing has continued to be really solid in the canyon, with a lot of those DFW fish from the heavy stocking a few weeks back still swimming around waiting to be caught. It seems like North Lake and Intake 2 are still good choices but being smaller lakes they’ve slowed down a bit. Flows on the Middle Fork Bishop Creek are low as they’re trying to hold water in Lake Sabrina. The flows on the South Fork on the other hand, just increased as they began pulling water from South Lake.
We spent a good 2.5 hours last week stocking Idaho Rainbows all through the canyon including both forks of Bishop Creek, the ponds and Sabrina. These fish were mostly in the 1lb range but some bigger fish in the 2-3lb range were mixed in – and they sure fight awful good!!! We can’t thank our little team of neighbors (Parchers Resort, Cardinal Village Resort, Bishop Creek Lodge, Creekside RV Park, & Lake Sabrina Boat Landing) and the Bishop Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau for coordinating these supplemental stockings – they really spice things up. Pretty stoked we have one more co-op stocking to go, and perhaps another surprise or two up our sleeves as well……hmmmmmmmm
