WITH THE SIGNIFICANT HIGH FLOWS DISREGARD WHAT IS WRITTEN BELOW UNTIL FLOWS COME BACK INTO BETTER SHAPE! IF YOU MUST FISH, GOOD LUCK AND USE YOUR HIGH-WATER TACTICS TO TRY AND BE SUCCESSFUL. FLOOD LIKE STAGES OF THE RIVER USUALLY HAPPEN IN THE SPRING BUT SOMETIMES EVENTS LIKE THESE HAPPEN DURING WINTER. FOR THOSE WHO REMEMBER THE FLOOD OF 1997 THIS PALES IN COMPARISON! With the current flows concentrate your efforts in the deeper pools mid AM, move into the seams and riffles into the afternoon and then back into the pools in the mid-afternoon. Streamer fishing is on right now as fish are gearing up for the winter months. Get proficient with your streamer techniques because the payoff could be one of the elusive big browns that reside in the T. From Boca, downstream to Stateline, flows are best and this is where most are concentrating their efforts. It’s not often that Streamers fishing is better than the nymph rigs but it’s that time of year! Don't discount Crayfish patterns as these can be effective, there easy target for large trout and are often overlooked with traditional streamers! 2x and 3x for streamer rigs, leaning more towards the 2x. If the streamer gig isn’t your thing don’t worry as there are still plenty of trout being caught on nymph rigs. Darker colored Stones, BWO’s, Baetis, and Midges are all present on the Trout’s diet this time of year. For the purist, one can sit on the banks and wait for some nice fish to rise to BWO’s and Baetis dries along the shoulders of deep pools or slowly drying their wings further out in pools with some flow. On another note let’s all remember proper ethics and C&R techniques as temps have dropped. Let’s not play trout to exhaustion and handle minimally or not at all. Remember, there will be days where you'll do great and the next you'll get your you know what handed to you, it's the Truckee. To learn the river exponentially, hire one of our local guides. It's worth the money if you fish this occasionally or want to learn it's secrets! Great list of local guides on bottom of page.
