Eagle Lake Fish Report

Eagle Lake - Susanville, CA (Lassen County)

The weather really warmed up up here this week.  Surface water temperature rose from 60 to 64 degrees.  We also had a lot of algae scum on the surface which made trolling tough in some areas.  The days were bright and sunny with little wind.  With this change in the weather pattern, the fishing pattern began to change also.  The "bite window" became shorter in some areas.  Fish are still being caught in shallow water, 8-12 feet deep trolling baits 5-6 feet deep.  Once this bite turns off, move out to 12-25 feet of water.  I'd still troll at least one bait at 5-6 feet deep and move the others down to 8-12 feet deep. Trolling: With the warm weather and flat calm days, the water is heating up fast and the fish are on the move from the north and mid basins to the the deeper, cooler south basin of Eagle Lake.  We had been fishing off the "Broccoli Tree", just south of Pelican Pt on the west side.  This bite had turned to a "hit and miss" situation.  A more consistent shallow water bite can be found on the west side south of Shrimp Island in 8-12 feet of water.  Early is best.  After the sun is on the water, move out to deeper water as mentioned above.  Trollers are still catching fish on Sep's #2 watermelon grubs.  Also catching fish this week were #6 or #8 orange trolling flies.  In deeper water fish were also caught on frog green needle fish. I did fly fish Monday and Wednesday and we caught and released fish on #14 and #16 orange scuds.  Pretty good mornings both days with around 20 fish to the boat each day.  We missed quite a few strikes too, both days.

Bobber Fishing:
As mentioned above the fish are transitioning so "good one day, not so hot the next".  Bobber anglers were catching fish off the Youth Camp shoreline and still are but they are not limiting easily every day.  Another good bobber fishing location is the Shrimp Island area.
