Opening day was great on the McCloud River, as low flows made for easy access wading. Moderate crowds showed up, but everyone seemed to be hooking trout. Best fishing was down stream of Ash Camp below Hawkins Creek through the Nature Conservancy. Use small nymphs like size 18 micro mayflies and size 18 red & black copper johns. Size 16 amber princes as well as size 16 pheasant tails, poxy back golden stones size 14 & 16. Traditional flies like small nymphs in the morning and throughout the mid day until things warm up. Look for rising trout in the foam lines and use size 16 Lt Cahill’s with no parachute and Adams size 16 & 18 no parachutes. Water temp 54 degrees. Best fishing was mid day to dusk.
