EAST WALKER RIVER

We’re still in the midst of a heat wave up here in the Sierra, with the water flows low and the temperatures high, it’s best not to be on the river at all right now. We’re praying for the river to stay strong through this heat but it’s going to be a tough go. If you’re wanting to fish the East Walker it’s best if you can put off your trip until the weather and water cools, likely sometime in the beginning of September.

SCEIRINE RANCH

As with the California side of the river it’s time to let the ranch rest, most of the reservations we had for the next 6 weeks or so have been canceled, we have a couple still on the books that we don’t have contact information on, if you have a reservation between now and September, please give us a call and we can get you off the books and book dates for later in the season when the temperatures come down. 760-932-7707

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR

Bridgeport has slowed to a crawl this week, the water is very warm and very green right now. There hasn’t been very many anglers fishing it lately, the ones who have been have still been catching some good perch but we haven’t heard of any trout being caught lately. The perch still seem to be biting a bit on the troll with needlefish, crawlers and small Rapalas. It’s likely that the trout won’t start biting again until the water cools down.

KIRMAN LAKE

No new news from Kirman this week, since they planted those brookies last week. When we hear something, we’ll pass it on!

TWIN LAKES

We’re still seeing some good fish coming in from the Twins, both on social media as well as some fish being brought into the shop for photos and weighing. It doesn’t sound like everyone is catching fish but there are some anglers having some luck. One lucky angler caught a 9 pound brown this week, one of the nicer fish we’ve seen for a while. There are lots of kokanee being caught up there, it sounds like they’re hanging out pretty deep but they can be caught with downriggers or jigging. There are also some fish being caught from the shore bait fishing during the day, sounds like one of the keys is to use a little larger weight and get a good long cast to get your bait away from the shore as far as you can.

WEST WALKER RIVER

Pretty much the same as last week on the West Walker, some good reports and some not so good. There are some fish being caught with a couple good reports coming in from the stretch along Highway 395 up near the town of Walker and a couple good reports coming in from the Pickle Meadows area. Fly anglers are having some success with hopper/dropper rigs, bait anglers are having some success with eggs and crawlers and lure anglers are having the best luck early and late in the day with Panther Martins and Mepps spinners. The water is thin and clear so try to be as stealthy as you can so you don’t spook the fish before you have a chance at them.

VIRGINIA LAKES

The Virginias are still seeing some decent action, the anglers fishing from tubes and kayaks seem to be doing the best and for the anglers who are fishing from the shore, the ones who can get a good long cast are having the most success. Baits that are working include pinched crawlers, mice tails and power bait, good lures are Kastmasters, Thomas Bouyants and mini jigs. For flies try mini leeches, matukas, soft hackles and beetles.

RANDOM INFORMATION: The weather is still hot here which is keeping the water temps pretty high in the area. Though this fish report is far from glowing, there are still some good fishing opportunities to be had in the area, getting off the beaten path and fishing smaller waters where there are more natural fish is a good idea, as well as getting into the back country to fish lakes and streams that are a bit away from the crowds. With the low water conditions it’s always good to be as sneaky as you can so you don’t spook the fish. The scenery is always great and I’m pretty sure a slow day fishing still beats working!
