The LT continues to fish very well

The LT continues to fish very well, especially for those using nymphs. The dry fly bite is a bit more inconsistent but can be good if fishing the upper river at the top parking lot most days, with baetis still being the main hatch right now. We are probably just a few short weeks away from the PMDs starting up once again, which will be the big hatch through the summer. Carpenter ants are just beginning to show as well and can provide an opportunity to throw a dry fly on both the Truckee and the LT, as well as other nearby river systems. With the start of these hatches, the emergence of smaller Yellow Sally stoneflies, March browns, green sedge caddis and Mother’s Day caddis, the wide range of opportunities will tempt the fish to vary their diet a bit more. This means that anglers should look to do the same with their fly selection. With the current flows and some larger fish in the system making their way up from the lake, we recommend using 5x tippet to have better odds at turning a hot lake run fish. Please continue to keep an eye out for any spawning fish and redds and avoid fishing to them or wading anywhere near these areas. As always, if you have any questions regarding the best practices of fishing during this time of year, don’t hesitate to ask.
